As most of you technology geeks must be using the Windows Server 2008. And a lot might have already ran out of their allocated evaluation period of 60 days J.
But don’t worry it’s not the end of your exploration with this new enhanced server from Microsoft. If you want to extend the evaluation period it’s really simple. I came across an email from a colleague of mine a great developer rather a master mind; thanks Naweed.
So if your 60 days initial evaluation period nears to end just follow these simple steps to increase the period using the Slmgr.vbs script.
1. Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.
2. Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and then press ENTER to check the current status of your evaluation period.
3. To reset the evaluation period, type slmgr.vbs –rearm, and then press ENTER.
4. Restart the computer.
This resets the evaluation period to 60 days.
You can find more ways to of extending this evaluation here in this kb article:
- How to install Windows Server 2008 without activating it
- How to manually extend the evaluation period
- How to automate the extension of the evaluation period
But keep in mind that you can only extend to a max of 240 days (i.e. 3 extensions)

Small tips but save alot.
Good article man keep it up.
This is given in microsoft website…. Also u can automate the same using an xml file..

does this apply to VS 2008 beta 2 also..i have VS 2008 beta 2 but i can not find slmgr.vbs on my machine.
thanks
Well Sidd the above mentioned procedure is for Windows Server 2008 alone.
And if you are talking about the VPC for VS 2008 beta 2 that has prematurely expired on 1st November. I can suggest three work workarounds.
1. The VPC throws up a message box after an hour and restarts after another, if you might be using it for testing purpose you might be able to live with this situation.
But for people who require it for longer periods:
2. You can upgrade your OS installation as long you have a valid license for Windows Server 2003.
3. Download the new Visual Studio VPC images from the following link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa700831.aspx under the heading of “VPC Images with pre-installed Software”.
For further news you can go to the Jeff Beehlers Blog http://blogs.msdn.com/jeffbe/archive/2007/10/27/update-on-expiring-vs2008-beta2-vpcs.aspx he is the lead program manager on Visual Studio Team System.
